January 27, 2011 -- Annual Meeting. William Millar, president of the American Public Transportation Association, delivered our keynote speech, "Transportation Practice and Politics," a discussion of public transportation's role in the U.S. transportation network and a prognosis for legislation reauthorizing surface transportation programs. The meeting also included the presentation of two awards.

September 22 – Jack Basso, Program Finance and Management, AASHTO. Discussed: the ramifications of extending the highway program for 3 - 6 months at current funding levels vis-a-vis Highway Trust Fund balances and whether the House rules would permit such an extension and impacts associated with varied extension options possibly being considered.
October 6 – Jack L. Schenendorf, Counsel, Covington and Burling, LLP. Discussed: the current legislative state of affairs and a new user fee proposal to save the Highway Trust Fund. The Report: PDF.

Tuesday, February 24 - Road Gang Luncheon at Ritz Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City. This Luncheon is combined with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Washington Briefing, featuring the Honorable Ray H. LaHood, Secretary of Transportation as keynote speaker. This Luncheon is full.

Kirby is director of transportation planning for the National Capital Rfegion Transportation Planning Board. Since joining the Council of Governments, Ron has been responsible for long range planning for highway and public transportation systems in the Washington, DC area. Ron will "connect the dots" between transportation and greenhouse gas emissions in the DC metropolitan area and describe strategies for carbon reductions.
